One big turbo TT conversion leaves and another one drives in right behind it. Or something like that.
While similar in scope to the last project, this one has some very substantive differences. Owner priorities top the list of reasons for taking a different approach to a similar task. The owner of this 2001 TT 1.8T quattro uses this car almost exclusively for track days and autocrossing. From its purpose-built suspension to its obtrusive-but-necessary rear muffler, this TT is designed to get around a road course as quickly as possible. Toward that end, sorted suspension and braking set-ups are extremely important, but horsepower obviously has its place. While more power is almost always welcome, in this case it's not just how much power, but also how its delivered. Big turbos equal big power, but they usually take a bit of time to spool up and deliver. A huge wallop of mid-range torque is quite fun on the street, but when it happens while exiting a tight corner it can become a tremendous hinderance by upsetting the balance of the car. Smooth and consistent delivery is the main goal for this kind of car and we've chosen components we feel will offer our customer the best compromise between power and delivery.
We'll be using Garrett's (relatively) small GT28RS "Disco Potato" turbo upgrade. We use the word small as compared to, let's say, a GT3076R, but compared to the OE K04 that came with the 225-hp version of the Mk1 TT, our GT28RS is plenty big. This turbo is well sized to the 1.8-liter engine and its ball-bearing design allows for a very quick spool. The tune we'll be using will control the boost curve to maximize the power delivery while making it as smooth and progressive as possible.
We're swapping out the two small OE side-mounted intercoolers for a larger front-mount set-up that will not only offer a larger cooling surface area, it will also allow for better front brake cooling as well.
We're not swapping out connecting rods this time and with the likelihood of all required parts either already here or showing up on time, we ought to wrap-up this conversion rather quickly. Good thing, too, because right behind it there will be a VW 2.0TFSI GT3071R driving in right behind it.
Or something like that.
