We'll be in touch with him over time and we'll try to update this blog to reflect his progress.

July 2, 2007

The most recent addition to the bpd stable is this 1989 Golf Rallye (Rallye Golf).

This model was built by VW Motorsport as a 5000-car homologation run between 1989 and 1990. Designed for European rallying, the Rallye Golf took too long to develop and by the time it was ready for production, FIA rule changes had made it already obsolete. As a result most of the 5000 production cars made it into private owner hands.

Never officially imported to the US, in all likelihood there are no more than 20 or so examples currently on this side of the Atlantic. Yes, it's a rare car and one that is even more special due to its motorsport heritage.

Outfitted with a 1763cc G60 supercharged 4-cylinder engine and mated to a 5-speed transmission delivering power to all four wheels, the Rallye was a rather nice performer for its day. Though not appreciably quicker than similar-engine Corrados of its day, the Rallye's seam-welded chassis and awd capabilities made it a very competent handler.

Our Aqua Blue Pearl example is a little bit rough around the edges, but we plan to get it back to showroom condition soon. Like most existing Rallyes, our car has been modified in several areas. It didn't take long for most G60 owners to realize their superchargers were high-maintenance mistresses and more than a few decided to bin the little G60 snail altogether. Our previous owner was one such individual and in the G60's place on our Rallye resides a twin-screw Lysholm-version supercharger replacement kit manufactured by the Canadian firm, Bahn Brenner Motorsport. It's quite stout compared to the original G60, but it's also loud as hell (think large firetruck en route to a 5-alarm fire) and as such we're already thinking about other engine and forced induction options.

Other mods include a rather nice Koni suspension kit and a set of wide 16x9" Schmidt Modernline wheels wrapped in Pirelli 215/40-16 P-Zero Nero tires. The interior is mostly stock and the factory-equipeed half-leather Recaros are still in great shape. We're going to swap the VW Motorsport harnesses for some proper 3-point OEM seatbelts, but other than that we have no major plans for the interior of our Rallye.

The scope of this project is mostly about bringing our Rallye back to a more pristine condition cosmetically and mechanically and in the process we hope to show it off a bit and have some fun driving it. We consider this to be a perfect bpd Primer candidate, so if someone wants to commission us for an engine swap, complete restoration, or anything else along that spectrum, feel free to contact us for a discussion. We'll soon be listing this in the upcoming Primers section on our site, but in the mean time, please follow along with us here as we develop and pursue this project in greater detail
